6) THE MOUNTAIN (Previous Ranking: 9)

Category: Brawler

Because of his sheer size and power, Gregor Clegane’s position on this list is telling: if you rank any character above him, you have to be able to envision that fighter overwhelming “The Mountain that Rides” in mortal, one-on-one combat. That’s no easy task; just ask Ser Hugh of the Vale.

The Mountain is so intimidating and vicious that Bronn (a man who knows how to keep his head on his shoulders) won’t face him as Tyrion’s champion after Tyrion’s trial for regicide. “I’d be a bloody fool if he didn’t frighten me,” Bronn says. “He’s freakish big and freakish strong, and quicker than you’d expect for a man of that size. Maybe I could take him, dance around until he’s so tired of hacking at me he dropped his sword, get him off his feet somehow. But one misstep, and I’m dead.” (“Mockingbird,” S4/E7).

The five characters we’ve ranked higher than the Mountain could never overcome him in a purely physical confrontation; they are masters of their weapons who can potentially outmaneuver and overwhelm the massive brute through dexterity, patience and skill.
