A Song of Dan and Josh: Catelyn X

Welcome back to A Song of Dan and Josh, where myself and FanSided editor walk through each and every chapter of George R.R. Martin’s seminal series, picking them apart and seeing what makes them tick. This week, we’re tackling Catelyn X from A Game of Thrones; not much book left to go! What did we think of it?

Here are some of our talking points:

  • This chapter features the Battle of the Whispering Wood, which we read hot on the heels of the Battle of the Green Fork, which was told from Tyrion’s perspective. This time, we’re in Catelyn’s head. How does this change the feel of the battle, and why does Martin choose to present it in this way?
  • Catelyn X features a lovely passage where Catelyn contemplates the shape of her life, and how much of it has been spent waiting. What does that say about Catelyn’s place in Westerosi society, and by extension the place of women in general?
  • As usual, Martin lays in foreshadowing for events and characters arcs that will come later. This time, we contemplate the futures of Theon Greyjoy and the Mormont women.
