Game of Thrones brings home the gold with seven Creative Arts Emmy awards

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards took place over the weekend, and Game of Thrones made a respectable showing by winning in seven categories against some serious competition including HBO’s other darling, Westworld. Costume designer Michele Clapton took home the gold for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, thanks to her work on the outfits from episode 706, “Beyond the Wall.”

Before the awards ceremony kicked off on Saturday, Clapton discussed her costumes from the show, and fittingly enough, she said the white furs worn by Daenerys Targaryen in “Beyond the Wall,” was her favorite. She also teased that Dany might be wearing some outfits that will pay homage to her brothers Rhaegar and Viserys, in season 8. Here’s the competition Clapton beat for the trophy:

  • Fahrenheit 451
  • The Handmaid’s Tale (Episode: “Seeds”)
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events (Episode: “The Vile Village: Part 1”)
  • Westworld (Episode: “Akane no Mai”)

For Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series, Limited Series, Movie Or Special, Game of Thrones won with the season 7 finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf.”

  • American Horror Story: Cult
  • The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
  • Star Trek: Discovery (Episode: “Will You Take My Hand?”)
  • Westworld (Episode: “The Riddle of the Sphinx”)

Composer Ramin Djawadi finally won a much-deserved Emmy, with his score for the season 7 finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf,” in the category Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score). Interestingly enough, he was up against himself, with his work on Westworld.

  • Mark Isham, Cindy O’Connor and Michael Simon for Once Upon a Time (Episode: “Leaving Storybrooke”)
  • W.G. Snuffy Walden and A. Patrick Rose for SEAL Team (Episode: “Pattern Of Life”)
  • Kevin Kiner for Star Wars Rebels (Episode: “Family Reunion – And Farewell”)

Sadly, Thrones did not win in every Creative Arts Emmy category it was nominated for. The most notable loss came from Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series, where Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell) lost to Samira Wiley from The Handmaid’s Tale. Other categories Game of Thrones did not win include:

  • Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour) — Winner: Stranger Things
  • Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series — The Handmaid’s Tale won against three episodes from Game of Thrones: “Beyond the Wall,” The Dragon and the Wolf,” and “The Spoils of War.”
  • Outstanding Hairstyling For A Single-Camera Series — Winner: Westworld
  • Outstanding Makeup For A Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic) — Winner: Westworld
  • Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series — Winner: The Crown

Game of Thrones had a tough road to get to seven wins, with Westworld taking awards the show was nominated in. Westworld showrunner Jonathan Nolan had a fun quote about winning, on the night, saying, “I’d like to thank Dan and Dave for wrapping up Game of Thrones so some of us can win F**king Emmys.”

Game of Thrones will have plenty of opportunities to bring home more golden statues, when the Primetime Emmy Awards show airs on September, 17.
