The Last Jedi tops Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok in Blu-Ray sales for the US

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the best-selling Blu-Ray in the United States, according to The Numbers.com. With sales outpacing those of box office powerhouses like Black Panther (2nd), Thor: Ragnarok (3rd) and Coco (4th), The Last Jedi‘s success highlights the lasting legacy of the Star Wars franchise and its ability to speak its magic to new audiences.

There’s no end in sight, either, with Disney planning a new Star Wars movie to release every year for, well, forever. Disney also owns Marvel Studios, meaning the second and third films on this list also made a boatload of cash for the Mouse.

The Last Jedi has proven a controversial installment for the Star Wars series: despite a gargantuan $450 million dollar opening weekend, helmer Rian Johnson’s darker-veering story riled up some fans and stumbled with a weak 56 percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, to say that Episode VIII is now the most divisive film in the Star Wars cinematic universe, would be a massive understatement.

Reviews were mixed, ranging from underwhelmed CNN critic Brian Lowry to a blown away Peter Bradshaw at The Guardian.

The difficult reaction to The Last Jedi may have to do with its obvious flaws, but the film is a sweeping, ambitious epic that doesn’t feel like any of the Star Wars films that came before it. This darker, more introspective turn may cause problems for a lot of fans, but if the series wants to survive over the long term it has to evolve in new directions, and change can be painful.

One place where it isn’t hurting, however, is in Disney’s Blu-Ray profits purse. Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters in December of 2019, and will mark the end of the sequel trilogy. Where Disney/Lucasfilm goes from there, may very well have to do with how successful the film does at the box office, and then later, when it’s released on digital and Blu-Ray.
