Matching 50 Game of Thrones characters with 50 European countries
Liechtenstein: Gilly
With a population of only 33,000 people, Liechtenstein is another of Europe’s teeny tiny countries. Nevertheless, this unassuming country has an interesting background that matches up with Gilly, wildling mom and lover to Sam Tarly.
For instance, did you know that women in Liiechtenstein only just got the right to vote in national elections in the 1984? The referendum passed with a mere 51.3% of the vote, and women didn’t get the right to vote in local elections until 1986.
Gilly also spent most of her life without rights. She spent her childhood under the oppressive thumb of her father/husband Craster. It was only after she had her son, ran off with Sam and spent time on the other side of the Wall that she realized it was possible for her to have a better life. But now that she has, there’s no going back. Gilly speaks her mind and we’re totally here for it.
Additionally, Liechtenstein was once accidentally invaded by its neighbor, Switzerland. No joke, it was a total accident. Liechtenstein chose not to retaliate and let its neighbor off without any incident. The situation reminds me of the terrible things that happen to Gilly by mere circumstance of her birth. But despite all of that, she often chooses to turn the other cheer and move on with life as best she can. It’s downright admirable!
