Georgia: Khal Drogo

No, I’m not talking about the state in the American southeast.

Georgia might be one of the smaller countries in Europe, but don’t let it slip by unnoticed. This area has a fascinating culture Khal Drogo might appreciate. Let me explain.

For one thing, the language spoken in Georgia is incredibly unique, and provides visitors with more than a few daunting tongue twisters. It even has its own alphabet! Likewise, when Game of Thrones first premiered, the Dothraki tongue took off like wildfire. The language became so popular with audiences that in 2012 146 newborn girls were named “Khaleesi” in the United States alone, in honor of the Dothraki term for the wife of a khal.

In addition to its fascinating language, Georgia places a heavy emphasis on religion. The Orthodox Church reigns supreme here, with a majority of Georgians saying they belong to the Church. Khal Drogo, too, has a strong sense of faith. The Dothraki worship the Great Stallion and take their religion seriously. In one memorable scene, Drogo has his new wife eat a horse’s heart as part of a ritual involving their unborn child. Nothing in the Georgian Orthodox Church is that extreme, of course, but Drogo would appreciate the dedication.
