Doctor Who: Missy gets her own audio spin-off from Big Finish!
By James Aggas
Big Finish today have announced some very exciting news. In February 2019, Missy will be having some audio adventures of her own, outside of Doctor Who. Without the Doctor there to stop her…
When Missy’s story seemingly came to an end in The Doctor Falls, I must admit, I was pretty sad. Michelle Gomez consistently gave an absolutely brilliant performance as the female incarnation of the Master. Psychotic and playful, but also the closest to becoming a true friend to the Doctor for a long time. It was quite an interesting journey that she had in Doctor Who, so it was a shame to reach her ending.
But while Missy’s story has finished on television, that doesn’t mean that we can’t find out plenty more stories about her. After all, we’ll be hearing how she meets River Song in January 2019. And then, just one month later, we’ll be getting to hear more adventures with her. This time, in her very own audio series from Big Finish.
Michelle Gomez has revealed to Big Finish what it’s like to be playing Missy again.
"I was very excited to return to Missy’s world via the medium of audio because along the way I’ve always had a lot of fun with Missy; her voices and her rhythms. I absolutely love capturing it and distilling it down to the word on the page."
She sounds very excited, and I really can’t say I blame her. Big Finish have been excellent at not just giving characters their own audio spin-off series, but also at handling the Master’s many incarnations.
What did Missy get up to when the Doctor wasn’t around to stop her? We’ll find out in February 2019 in Missy: The Audio Adventures!

The latest Master spin-off series
Last year’s The War Master: Only the Good box set was fantastic proof of both. One of my favorite releases from 2017, Derek Jacobi’s Master was delightfully evil to hear, especially in a series where the Doctor wasn’t around to stop him.
It sounds like we’ll be getting something like that with Missy: The Audio Adventures. But since she is a very different incarnation compared to Jacobi’s, it also sounds like we’ll be getting something different, too. Perhaps something that’s just a little more fun, at least based on producer David Richardson’s words.
"Missy’s own series is just like the Time Lady herself – anarchic, funny, unpredictable and wildly imaginative. It’s absolutely glorious to have Michelle returning to the character at Big Finish, and our recording days have been filled with so much laughter."
Missy meets the Monk!
So, there’s a lot to look forward to with this release. But if Missy getting her own series wasn’t exciting enough, then check out who she’s meeting: the Meddling Monk, as played by Rufus Hound!

The Big Finish follower in me is jumping with joy right now. For almost three years now, Rufus Hound’s interpretation of the Monk has been fantastic to hear. He brings a sense of comedy and mischievousness, just like Peter Butterworth did in the TV series, and Graeme Garden in the Eighth Doctor Adventures. But he also provides his own take that’s fresh and feels modern, almost like an incarnation from the New Series. In fact, he’s even faced the Weeping Angels!
So it’s wonderful to hear him go up against a New Series enemy as major as Missy. Especially as we’ve never seen or heard the Monk with any incarnations of the Master previously. So the Whovian in me, both Classic and New, is hugely excited about the idea of these very different renegade Time Lords meeting.
Missy: The Audio Adventures will be available on CD and download on February 2019, and can be pre-ordered now from Big Finish’s website.
