River Song meets four Masters in the latest trailer for Series Five of her spin-off series!

A new trailer has been released for the fifth series of The Diary of River Song, which features the archaeologist going up against not one but four Masters!

Have you heard the news earlier today about Missy getting her own audio spin-off series? Exciting, isn’t it? In some ways, though, it’s not too surprising. After all, as well as getting her own spin-off series, we also know that Missy will be meeting River Song next year, in The Diary of River Song: Series Five.

Not just Missy, either. River will be meeting four incarnations of the Doctor’s greatest enemy, the Master. These will include the decaying Master from the Classic Series, as played by Geoffrey Beevers; Eric Roberts’s possessed Master from the TV movie; the War Master, played by Derek Jacobi, and of course Missy, as played by Michelle Gomez.

A lot of us have been excited about this upcoming box set for a while, and recently Big Finish have released a new trailer for the series. Check it out below.

Meeting many Masters

Where to begin with this trailer? First off, Michelle Gomez meeting River Song already sounds fantastic. Playful, evil and dangerous. The fact that River Song hears “Hello, Sweetie” and her reaction to that sounds fantastic.

Geoffrey Beevers sounds delightful as ever as the decaying Master. An incarnation who doesn’t suffer fools gladly, (trust me, he can’t even tolerate his own future self,) it’ll be interesting to hear what he makes of River.

As for Eric Roberts? I’ve got to be honest: he actually sounds much better than he did in the TV movie. More restrained, judging from what little of his performance we’ve heard so far. Let’s see if the rest of it matches up.

And of course, they save Derek Jacobi for last. I’m not saying he’s the best that Big Finish have, but he really is magnificent in the role. We get very little of his performance here, but we know already that it’ll be fantastic.

Out of all four of these Master and River pairings, which one am I looking forward to hearing most? In this particular case, it’s got to be Missy and River. It’s just one of those ideas that should have happened in Capaldi’s era, and makes you wonder why it hasn’t happened until now. I’m excited to hear all of these different incarnations meeting River, but the idea of Alex Kingston and Michelle Gomez together already sounds brilliant.

Still, we don’t have that many details on the box set. Will Series Five tell an overarching plot, as with the first four series? Or will we simply be hearing River’s random encounters with the Master across her life? I’m curious to see what will happen with this series.
