The world is getting another Joker. Jared Leto’s white trash superstar take on the character debuted in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and will return alongside Margot Robbit as Harley Quinn in another movie down the line. But while we wait for that, Joaquin Phoenix will play the Crown Prince of Crime in a lower-budget, more down-to-earth film from director Todd Philips, who’s worked on everything from Borat to Lady Gaga vehicle A Star Is Born. Over the weekend, Philips posted a video showing Phoenix being transformed into the iconic villain:

Well, that is certainly something. Phoenix has the Joker smile down pat, but am I the only one who thinks the “before” image makes him look like Javier Bardem from No Country for Old Men?

The movie is simply called Joker. Per the Independent, it’s a standalone film set in the 1980s. Phoenix will play a character named Arthur Fleck, a struggling standup comedian who kidnaps a talk show host. Absent any appearance by Batman, the plot sounds a bit like Martin Scorsese’s 1982 film The King of Comedy, which may explain why Robert De Niro is in it. Other cast members include Zazie Beetz (Domino in Deadpool 2) and comedian Marc Maron.

There are other teases for the movie floating around, like this extended version of the transformation video, which includes Phoenix’s character having a close encounter with a clown on the street…

…and this taste of Phoenix with the Joker’s signature purple jacket…and also a knife:

From Heath Ledger’s Academy Award-winning performance as the Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight to now, we’ve had several interpretations of the character in a short amount of time. We’ll see how Phoenix’s version stacks up when Joker hit theaters on October 4, 2019.
