Sam is the narrator of Game of Thrones

The theories surrounding Samwell Tarly range from plausible to highly unlikely, which may be what makes them so entertaining. Let’s hit a couple.

First up, some fans theorize that Sam is, in some form or fashion, the “narrator” of the story, and is either recounting the tale of the wars following the death of King Robert to an audience or, more likely given who we’re talking about, writing it down in a book a la Bilbo and Frodo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings.

This makes some measure of sense…Sam is one of the show’s most articulate and intelligent characters, and already spends most of his time with books. Also, when he visited Oldtown, the show threw in a meta reference when Sam laid eyes on the Citadel library. Doesn’t the centerpiece look a lot like the spinning astrolabe from the intro sequence?

Also, Martin is a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings, so who’s to say he couldn’t crib a page from it when writing an epilogue?
