HBO and Brewery Ommegang have teamed up to release a series of Game of Thrones-themed beers. The Hand of the Queen Barleywine Ale and the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms Sour Blonde Ale Blend, brewed in honor of functional alcoholic siblings Tyrion and Cersei Lannister respectively, are already on store shelves. Now, fans can partake of the Mother of Dragons Smoked Porter & Kriek Ale Blend, modeled after Daenerys Targaryen herself.
“Mother of Dragons pours a deep ruby-tinted mahogany with a creamy tan head,” writes HBO. “Aromas of chocolate covered cherries intertwine with subtle smoke and roasted malt.”
"The flavor is rich with tart cherry up front leading to a center palate of semi-sweet chocolate then resolving to subtle smoke and mild sweetness. The mouthfeel is luxuriously creamy and full, and the finish is semi-dry with lingering notes of smoke and cherry sweetness."
HBO Licensing & Retail and Brewery Ommegang were kind enough to provide us with a bottle of the Mother of Dragons to sample. It goes down easy, although I don’t taste any cherries. It’s not a sweet beer, and in fact has a bit of a bitter aftertaste; perhaps that’s the smokey flavor, which no dragon-themed beer should be without. It’s an interesting compliment to the other beers from the Royal Reserve Collection released thus far, and worth a trip down the hatch.
The bottle, as you can see, looks cool, with a striking red-pink-on-black color scheme and the three-headed Targaryen dragon sigil on the label. I think it’s the best-looking Royal Reserve beer yet, inside the bottle and out.
The Mother of Dragons Smoked Porter & Kriek Ale Blend is available now, on draft and in 750ml bottles, with a suggested price of $12.99 per bottle.
Next up: the fourth and final beer in the Royal Reserve Collection, the King in the North Imperial Stout.
