White Walker whisky out today, with more Game of Thrones scotches to follow
By Corey Smith
Game of Thrones and alcohol have a lot of options lately. No sooner does Brewery Ommegang release a beer based on Daenerys Targaryen than Johnnie Walker puts out a limited edition blended scotch: The White Walker. Available today for a suggested retail price of $36, the blend of single malt scotches from the Cardhu and Clynelish distilleries in northern Scotland comes to us courtesy of Diageo, the Lannisters of liquor. And in tribute to the Night King and his colleagues, the bottle is made using thermochromic ink, which will glow blue and white when cold. And cold, of course, is how this blent is meant to be served.
You can purchase the scotch here.
Dan Sanborn, the senior vice president of culture and partnerships at Diageo, gave some background to USA Today:
"[Northern Scotland faces] fierce and long winters, which then impacts the liquid that went into the White Walker. We really went to painstaking detail to match that white walker feeling and energy it evokes with the liquid and the scotches that we put in the bottle."
Additionally, Diageo is releasing a line of eight Game of Thrones-inspired single malt scotches, previously only available overseas, to U.S. markets. Each scotch is inspired by one of Westeros’ great houses, with Houses Stark, Targaryen and Lannister among those represented, along with the Night’s Watch. Prices range from $29.99-$64.99. “Game of Thrones tends to be a social show,” said HBO vice president of licensing and retail Jeff Peters. “A lot of people get together to watch it and talk about it. This is something for the fans to enjoy during celebratory viewings of the show.”
And is hard liquor isn’t your thing, you can always sample Brewery Ommegang’s line of Game of Thrones beers, or the line of Game of Thrones wines from Vintage Wine Estates. Like we said, you have options.
