It seems like only yesterday we were guessing at what Disney’s insanely expensive live-action Star Wars series would be about. Rumors had the show centered on the rise of the planet Mandalore after the fall of the Empire in Return of the Jedi. Then, as if out of nowhere, Jon Favreau — the man responsible for writing an producing the show — announced via his Instagram the broad strokes plot details, as well as the title of the show: The Mandalorian.
Then, Starwars.com released the official first image from the show during its weekly variety series The Star Wars Show. It also unveiled a pretty impressive lineup of directors:
The lineup:
- Dave Filoni, the showrunner for Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, will direct the premiere
- Deborah Chow (Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Fear the Walking Dead, and Mr. Robot)
- Rick Famuyiwa (The Wood, Dope)
- Bryce Dallas Howard…wait, the actress? Yes. Has she directed anything? Yeah, she’s done a handful of short films. I wonder if this has anything to do with her father Ron being brought on to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story after Disney fired Phil Lord and Chris Miller
- Taika Waititi, the guy behind Thor: Ragnarok; he also voiced Korg in that movie, hilariously
All in all, a pretty impressive lineup. Now let’s take a closer look at the image:
Obviously, this armor recalls that worn by Boba and Jango Fett from the mainline Star Wars movies. Jango is from the area, so this must be a Mandalorian thing. We don’t know who will play the titular Mandalorian, but former Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal (Prince Oberyn Martell) is rumored to be in the running. We approve.
The Madalorian does not have an official premiere date yet, but it’ll probably coincide with the launch of Disney’s streaming service in 2019.
