The Last Kingdom author Bernard Cornwell releases new book, gets a season 3 cameo
Netflix is gearing up for the long-awaited third season of The Last Kingdom, its historical fiction series about war-torn England in the 9th century. All 10 episodes will premiere sometime this year, and the official The Last Kingdom Twitter page is serving up a couple of juicy appetizers:
That’s the venerable Bernard Cornwell, author of The Saxon Tales, the book series on which The Last Kingdom is based. He’s making a fur-clad cameo appearance in season 3, looking like he fits right in. Cornwell’s character will cross paths with Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), a native Briton raised by the invading Danes, and the protagonist of the show. It’s only fitting, since Cornwell is actually a descendant of the original Uhtred and the Saxons of Bebbanburg.
Cornwell isn’t the first author to appear in a TV adaptation of his work. Although it didn’t make it to air, George R.R. Martin shot a cameo fore the first-ever episode of Game of Thrones, playing a merchant at Daenerys’ wedding to Khal Drogo. Only this photo remains as proof:
If you’re a fan of The Saxon Stories, or if you’ve watched the show and are curious, Harper Books reminds us that the newest book in the series, War of the Wolf, is out today.
War of the Wolf is the 11th novel in Cornwell’s series. The author isn’t sure of how many books he’ll need to finish the story, but he’s determined to get to the end. “I need to finish Uhtred,” he writes on his website.
Thus far, each season of The Last Kingdom has covered two of Cornwell’s book, so we can expect season 3 to adapt books 5 and 6, The Burning Land and Death of Kings. With the new season premiering no later than December, we can expect lots of Last Kingdom news, teasers and trailers in the near future!
