Doctor Who: Thirteenth Doctor Barbie doll now on pre-sale
By James Aggas
It’s recently been announced that a Barbie doll based on the Thirteenth Doctor is now on pre-sale and will be available December 3rd!
So, we’ve got some really interesting news. If you know someone who likes not only Doctor Who but also Barbie dolls (probably extremely young, but I’m sure this will appeal to older collectors, too), then you’re in luck.
A brand new Barbie doll based on the Thirteenth Doctor is now on pre-sale. You can order it from hottopic.com, barbie.com or bbcshop.com. The doll will then be made available on December 3rd, 2018. If you want to get these in a physical store, then your best and in fact only bet would be Hot Topic, who will be exclusively selling this as the only brick and mortar retailer for this doll.
I must admit, I’m definitely surprised at hearing this news. Less that Barbie are making these dolls based on the Thirteenth Doctor – after all, they couldn’t exactly sell them based on previous incarnations – and more that Barbie are selling Doctor Who merchandise at all. After all, Barbie is known worldwide, and sells a very distinctive kind of doll. So it’s pretty brilliant to know that little girls will be playing with such a doll based on a brilliant role model.

A different kind of Doctor Who merchandise
Sergei Kuharsky, EVP, Enterprise and Digital Franchises, BBC Studios – Americas, has gone into detail on why this is happening now.
"Given Barbie’s celebration of women who have made history, as well as iconic characters from some of the best loved movies and shows, we felt it was a great opportunity to work with Mattel to create a doll based on the Thirteenth Doctor. The Doctor Who Barbie doll offers fans and collectors a new way to celebrate the adventures of this iconic character."

It’s certainly surprising, but it’s also rather nice to know that Doctor Who merchandise is being made with a different target audience than the usual groups. I’m a massive Doctor Who collector myself – as evidenced by the sheer number of Big Finish reviews you’ll see on this site. But this is one piece of merchandise that I, and many people I know, won’t be getting.
That’s not a criticism. Because this is one piece of merchandise that isn’t made for us. This is made for both a certain type of collector and, I hope, young children who want a different kind of hero to look up to. Essentially, it’s another major reason why I hope Jodie Whittaker’s series is a consistently strong one. Especially after such an enjoyable opening episode.
Do you think it’s a good thing that the first ever Barbie doll based on an actual Doctor will soon be released? Do you think now is the right time for this item to be released? Let us know in the comments below.
