James Gunn will write and maybe direct the next Suicide Squad movie
Remember when Disney fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn for some inappropriate tweets he made years before the company hired him? Well, apparently Warner Bros. and DC aren’t bothered by that and have hired Gunn to write and possibly direct the next Suicide Squad film.

This is a bold move by DC, which has been losing the cinematic war with Marvel pretty much since the jump. And part of the reason it’s been losing is because of movies like Suicide Squad, which everyone pretty much agreed was terrible. Gunn, meanwhile, made a pair of movies based on a largely unknown group of comic book characters and raked in $1.6 billion, so he could be a real asset. Also, according to i09, Gunn has plans to take this next Suicide Squad movie in a new direction, which is probably a good idea since, as discussed, the last one stank up the place.
It’s even possible Gunn will bring a few Guardians alums with him. Dave Bautista, who plays the literally minded alien Drax in those movies, was vocally supportive of Gunn in the aftermath of his firing from Disney, and sounded excited that his friend had scored a new gig. “Where do I sign up!” he tweeted.

Does that mean Bautista wouldn’t appear in Guardians 3, for which Gunn already wrote a script? Or is he just throwing his weight around? In any case, Bautista wasn’t the only person who came out in praise of DC’s new hire. David Ayer, who directed the first Suicide Squad, was also pleased:

We should reiterate that, at the moment, Gunn has only been hired to write the next Suicide Squad. The credited director is Gavin O’Connor. That said, we wouldn’t be surprised if Gunn got a promotion, as Warner Bros. tries to make the most of him.
Suicide Squad 2 doesn’t have a release date yet.
