Phew: David Fincher is still directing the World War Z sequel

It’s been five years since World War Z, Brad Pitt’s zombie survival flick based on author Max Brook’s novel of the same name, hit theaters. The movie earned just over $540 million dollars, making it the highest grossing zombie film of all time.

World War Z follows UN employee Gerry Lane as a virus that turns humans into mindless rage-filled fast-moving zombies takes over the world one bite at a time. Soon after the success of the film, Paramount tasked J.A. Bayona with directing a sequel, but in 2015, he left to direct Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. When that happened, Pitt called buddy David Fincher, who directed him in Se7en, and Fincher joined the project. Screenwriter Dennis Kelly was brought on board as well, and he and Fincher began to sketch out ideas about how the sequel should look. Originally, they planned to film in 2018, but Fincher put things on hold to shoot season 2 of his Netflix series, Mindhunter.

Usually, when a film goes through that many changes, you could be forgiven for writing it off as doomed. Happily, producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner revealed that filming is still on, and that Pitt and Fincher are still attached, when they recently spoke to Variety:

Phew, World War Z 2 is still happening. Who else wants to see what the director of Fight Club take on a zombie flick?

The sequel begins filming in June of 2019. Strap on your running shoes.
