Watch the first teaser for Disney’s live-action take on Aladdin
Disney has been having a lot of luck lately remaking its animated classics from the ’90s. The House of Mouse has now released a first-look teaser for its latest live-action remake: Aladdin, swinging into theaters on a magic carpet next year.
To helm this project, Disney has hired Guy Ritchie, the man behind Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and Sherlock Holmes, the one with Robert Downey Jr. It’s an interesting choice. Disney CEO Bob Iger may develop a nervous condition waiting for the final cut.

Obviously, this movie has a lot to live up. Robin Williams’ performance as the Genie in the animated original is iconic. To fill his shoes, Disney has hired Will Smith. I’m looking forward to his take on “Friend Like Me”:
Other than Smith, the cast is mostly made up on unknowns. Mena Massoud (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) plays charming scoundrel Aladdin, Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) is the self-determined Princess Jasmine, and Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express) is Jafar, an ambitious, powerful sorcerer.
Disney’s Aladdin will hit theaters on May 24, 2019.
