Netflix’s Iron Fist, starring Game of Thrones’ Finn Jones, cancelled after two seasons

Iron First, part of Marvel’s Netflix offerings, has been cancelled after two seasons on the streaming giant, this per a joint statement issued from the two companies to Deadline. Headlined by Game of Thrones veterans Finn Jones (Loras Tyrell) and Jessica Henwick (Nymeria Sand), Iron Fist followed Jones in the titular role of Danny Rand/Iron Fist, a billionaire martial artist fighting crime in New York City. Here’s the full statement.
"Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on."
Iron Fist has the dubious distinction of being the first Marvel Netflix property to be cancelled, and the cancellation comes just one month after the series’ second season premiered. Season 2 of the series was the first under new showrunner Raven Metzner, and while it had been seen by some as an improvement on season 1, it appears it was not enough. Jones had also appeared in the crossover series The Defenders alongside Henwick and the rest of Marvel’s Netflix lineup, as well as a solo appearance in the second season of Luke Cage. There was no word on any potential future appearances in the Marvel Netflix universe for Jones or Henwick.
Iron Fist could potentially “live on” as the statement… states, in a move to Disney’s (Marvel’s owner) upcoming streaming service, expected to launch next year. Deadline reports there are no plans to pull any of Netflix’s other Marvel properties however. And while Finn Jones and Jessica Henwick might be looking for new jobs, at least it didn’t go down like Game of Thrones. Spears and wildfire and such.
