Warner Bros. pushes The Flash movie back to 2021

It looks like fans of the DC Extended Universe will have to wait a little longer than anticipated for a solo outing for the Flash, who made his DCEU debut in 2017’s Justice League, played by Ezra Miller. The untitled film has been pushed back until 2021 at the earliest, per Variety. According to many fans me, Miller’s Flash was one of the bright spots of Justice League, so this is disappointing news.

What’s the holdup? Well, like a lot of movies about DC superheroes, the Flash flick has a lot of problems. First and foremost, there’s Miller’s schedule. The Flash movie was originally assumed to begin filming next March, but Miller was scheduled to start shooting the third Fantastic Beasts film (also produced by Warner Bros.) around the same time. Perhaps more ominously, the Flash script continues to undergo rewrites as it cycles through directors. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, best known for helming Spider-Man: Homecoming, are currently attached to direct, but they’re the fourth person/team to fill that slot.

At this point, DC and Warner Bros. have to be itching for Aquaman, starring Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa, to finally hit theaters on December 14, just so they have something to energize the fan base. Otherwise, all they have to focus on the news that Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck are leaving the roles of Superman and Batman respectively, or they could stew in the critical and commercial underperformance of Justice League.

Hopefully all the problems work themselves out and the Flash movie ends up being worth the wait, but with Warner Bros.’ track record, I’m not getting my hopes. Oh, the DCEU; hang in there.
