We haven’t seen the last of Luke Skywalker. Straight from the Jedi Master himself, Mark Hamill confirmed this morning via Twitter that Luke will appear in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX, the last movie in the new trilogy that kicked off in 2015 with Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

“Episode Nein Comment” is an amazing way to say he’s not giving away any more secrets. He gets another gold medal.

It’s exciting to hear we’ll see Luke at least one more time, if not shocking. Luke died in Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, giving up the ghost in the traditional Jedi way: by spontaneously vanishing right out of his clothes. But in Star Wars, Jedi can and have come back as Force Ghosts. It happened with Yoda, it happened Obi-Wan Kenobi and it happened with Luke’s father Anakin, and we expect Luke to follow suit. Maybe he’ll train Rey for a showdown with Kylo Ren from beyond the grave.

J.J. Abrams is back in the director’s chair for Episode IX after Rian Johnson directed Episode VIII to infamously mixed reviewsEpisode IX still doesn’t have a subtitle, but we know it’s dropping into theaters on December 20 of 2019.
