Wonder Woman sequel gets delayed to 2020

Wonder Woman, the best film in the DC extended universe by a mile, is getting a sequel. “Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s (Gal Gadot) next big screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah (Kristen Wiig),” reads the official synopsis. Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell) will be on hand — always a plus — and Chris Pine will return to the role of Steve Trevor, now older and hanging out in malls…although how he survived that midair explosion from the first movie, I have no idea.

Originally, Wonder Woman 1984 was scheduled to hit theaters in November of 2019. Unfortunately, it’s now been pushed back to June 2020. But fear not: there doesn’t seem to be any problem with production, or at least, Warner Bros. and Gal Gadot are putting a happy face on it.

Warner Bros. also made a statement, echoing Gadot’s enthusiasm:

"We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs."

The changing landscape, huh? Does that sound like corporate-speak to anyone else?

It does make sense for Wonder Woman 1984 to debut in the summer, since that’s traditionally the time when all the tweens are crowding into theaters to spend their allowances or whatever. But over the past decade, studios have been releasing their tentpole pictures throughout the year. The idea of the “summer movie season” doesn’t have as much meaning as it used to. I just hope that all of this isn’t code for “the production is all kinds of messed up.”

As for what will replace Wonder Women 1984 in the November 2019 slot, Warner Bros.’ Six Million Dollar Man adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg seems like a good bet. Does that make up for it? A Six Million Dollar Man movie? Based on that robot show from the ’70s? Yeah?
