If this happens, Jerry Bruckheimer will remain onboard as a producer, and Disney hasn’t ruled out Johnny Depp reprising the role of Jack Sparrow. And I’m not opposed to Orlando Bloom returning as one-time series lead Will Turner, because if The Hobbit films have taught us anything, it’s that he’s ageless.

Over the course of five films and 14 years, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has grossed just over $4.5 billion, so it should come as no surprise that the House of Mouse wants to keep milking that particular cash cow going, even if audiences are growing tired of it. If it really wants to revitalize the franchise, Disney should commit to bringing in a new cast that can go on new adventures. Have them play wildly inaccurate caricatures of famous pirates from history, toss in that Disney magic, and then sit around a boardroom smoking cigars while dump trunks unload piles of money on their lawns.

One caveat: Jack the monkey absolutely stays. Savvy?
