Doctor Who: What horrors can we expect from Arachnids in the UK?

The Doctor finally gets her friends home, but of course, something is happening with the spiders in Sheffield, in the next episode of Doctor Who, Arachnids in the UK.

There’s not a lot known about the upcoming Doctor Who episode, Arachnids in the UK. Obviously, one thing that we can expect from the title are, of course, spiders. And the official description for the episode pretty much confirms that.

"‘Something’s happening with the spiders in this city.’ The Doctor, Yaz, Graham and Ryan find their way back to Yorkshire – and Yaz’s family – only to find something is stirring amidst the eight-legged arachnid population of Sheffield."

So we know that the episode will focus on spiders in some way. Will we be seeing terrifying giant eight-legged monsters? The trailer certainly seems to suggest so.

And if Kill the Moon has taught me anything, it’s that Doctor Who can make giant spiders look convincing and scary. (It’s just such a shame about the actual plot of that episode.) A lot of things have changed since the “Eight Legs” we got in Planet of the Spiders, that’s for sure.

A return home?

We also know that, after accidentally taking them with her in The Woman Who Fell to Earth before finding the TARDIS in The Ghost Monument and being diverted in Rosa, the Doctor will finally bring her new friends home.

More from Winter is Coming

In terms of establishing her new friends as companions, this episode is going to be rather crucial. For the first three episodes, Ryan, Yasmin and Graham were accidental companions. It wasn’t a life that they actually chose.

Over the past three episodes, however, we’ve seen them adapt naturally to it. True, it hasn’t always been easy, especially in the last episode. And they’ve all got lives back home. While Ryan and Graham seem to have less keeping them on Earth right now, Yasmin clearly wants to progress in her career as a police officer. So I suspect that out of all the companions, her choice to stay with the Doctor could be the most difficult.

Speaking of Yasmin, we’ll get to meet her family in this episode. How much more will we learn about her? More importantly, what will they make of her strange new friend the Doctor? I look forward to finding out.

Arachnids in the UK will be broadcast Sunday on BBC One at 7:00pm in the UK, and on BBC America at 8:00pm.
