The long-awaited sequel to Labyrinth has a script
Children of the 1980s rejoice! A sequel to Jim Henson cult classic film Labyrinth finally has a sequel in the works, and the film’s director has confirmed he has finished the script. In an interview with Fandango, director Fede Alvarez was discussing his newest film The Girl in the Spider’s Web — the next chapter of the Dragon Tattoo series — and dropped some exciting information about the Labyrinth sequel.
“I was actually having lunch yesterday with Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project,” Alvarez said. “We’re very excited about it. It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can’t tell you much more about it… but we have a script, and we’re very excited about it so we’ll see where that goes.”
That all sounds well and good, but when can we expect filming for the sequel to begin?
"Like always, it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they’re larger than life. But that’s one of the projects that I’m very excited about."

Sadly, Jim Henson passed away in 1990 at the age of 53, which is why Alvarez will be taking his role as the sequel’s director. Also, the Goblin King himself, David Bowie, died in 2016 after losing his battle with liver cancer. And, since George Lucas — who collaborated with Jim Henson on the production side of the film — sold Lucasfilm to Disney, there is no word if the House of Mouse will be involved with the sequel.
If you’re unfamiliar with Labyrinth, then shame on you, but the film centers around Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) a 15-year-old girl who makes a wish that her crying baby brother Toby would be taken away by Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie).
When Toby disappears, the Goblin King appears to Sarah and takes her to his kingdom, giving her 13 hours to solve his labyrinth, or else Toby will be turned into a goblin forever. Sarah meets Hoggle the cowardly dwarf who helps Sarah through the Labyrinth.
Sarah eventually confronts Jareth (and his super weird codpiece) and recites the last line of the play she’s in, which defeats the Goblin King and allows her to save her baby brother Toby, and return home.
The good news is, most of the supporting cast and characters are all puppets (Hoggle, Ludo, Sir Didymus and his trusty steed Ambrosius) created by Jim Henson. And, since his daughter, movie producer Lisa Henson, is the CEO of The Jim Henson Company, the Labyrinth sequel should have no shortage of Henson created puppets.

However, you shouldn’t expect the sequel to be in theaters anytime soon, as Alvarez is focused on The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which has its big screen debut on November 9.
“You never know,” he said. “And really right now, I’m just finishing with this film so I’m not even thinking about what I’m going to do next. But all I can tell you is that I had lunch with her yesterday and it was great.”
So it sounds like Lisa Henson and Fede Alvarez have a completed script and are moving forward soon. But, with no information about casting, filming, or even a projected release date, all we can hope for now, is that after Alvarez’s new film hits theaters, he will turn his attention to making the Labyrinth’s sequel.
If Hoggle, Ludo, Sir Didymus and Ambrosius aren’t in it, we riot.
