A Song of Dan and Josh: Tyrion IX (A Game of Thrones)

Welcome to A Song of Dan and Josh, the show where FanSided’s Josh Hill and I walk through each and every chapter of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, breaking them down and seeing what makes them tick.

The Take the Black Podcast is now on iTunes and Google Play! Please subscribe and download from there if you can. Also, you can help us out by giving us a five-star rating and leaving a friendly comment! We’re also now on Spreaker, so try us there, as well.

Today, we hit “Tyrion IX,” the final Tyrion chapter from A Game of Thrones. It’s one of the final chapters of A Game of Thrones all around; it feels like only yesterday Tyrion was walking the Wall, and here we are.

Anyway, let’s get chatting:

Let’s hit the highlights:

  • In this chapter, several big things happen offscreen, including Robb Stark breaking the siege at Riverrun and Renly Baratheon marrying Margaery Tyrell. Why did Martin choose to let these events occur offsides?
  • The highlight of “Tyrion IX” is definitely the ongoing tension between Tyrion and Tywin. Why does Tywin choose to give Tyrion new responsibility?
  • Tyrion immediately jumps to an extremely uncharitable conclusion about Tywin’s decision. Is he right? And why does Tyrion resolve to take Shae to King’s Landing immediately after Tywin tells him not to? The daddy issues run deep in this one.
  • Three cheers for Ser Harys Swyft, a comic character who doesn’t show up on TV.

What do you guys make of all this? Does Tyrion interpret Tywin’s actions correctly?

Anyway, we’re taking Halloween week off, but we’ll be back the week after with “Jon IX,” the final Jon Snow chapter from the book. Join us then at 4:00 p.m. on our Facebook page to watch it live!
