George R.R. Martin: Other Game of Thrones prequels “in active development”
By Corey Smith
Yesterday, it was announced that actress Naomi Watts had been cast in a lead role in HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, set during the Age of Heroes, thousands of years before the events of the main show. A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin took to his Not a Blog to express his excitement, and to remind everyone that that the Age of Heroes show isn’t the only spinoff in the works:
"Meanwhile, there are still a couple of other possible prequels in active development. I can’t tell you the subject matter of those projects, no, sorry, wish I could. The readers among you might want to grab a copy of FIRE & BLOOD when it is released on November 20, though."
We’ve known for a while that HBO was developing multiple prequels, at one point as many as five, but after the network ordered a pilot for the Age of Heroes show, we haven’t heard much about them. Nevertheless, Martin has consistently maintained that at least some of the other ideas are still alive. Are other pilot orders forthcoming?

Martin’s note about Fire and Blood is particularly interesting. That book tells the history of the Targaryen dynasty, tracing its development from the time of Aegon’s conquest through the Westerosi civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Is Martin hinting that one of the other prequels involves the Targaryens? That could fall roughly in line with a rumor about a second prequel show called Empire of Ash, although that series would purportedly be set in Old Valyria back when it was still a thriving civilization, before the timeline covered by Fire and Blood.
Still, color us intrigued. You can preorder Fire and Blood here if you like.
Circling back to the Age of Heroes show, Martin assured fans that showrunner Jane Goldman has her nose the grindstone. “She and her team are busy in London right now, neck deep in casting, and I expect some more names will be announced soon.” We’ll be watching.
