Watch the official trailer for True Detective season 3
By Dan Selcke
HBO’s True Detective has had an interesting history. The first season, which aired back in 2014, starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as mismatched detectives trying to crack a mysterious murder case in Louisiana. It was praised for its moody tone, textured performances, and narrative ambition.

Then the second season came along. It starred Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch and was about…transformation cults, or something? It was weird and convoluted and not nearly as well received, so writer Nic Pizzolatto took a few years off before coming back with True Detective season 3, out next year. This one stars Mahershala Ali as a detective in the Ozarks, and will jump between three different timelines. It sounds as ambitious and offbeat as ever, but let’s hope it’s not as bafflingly opaque as the last go-round.
