Before Game of Thrones, there was…Deadwood, HBO’s profanity-riddled Western about the development of the titular South Dakotan locale from camp to town. Featuring a talented ensemble cast, meticulous period detail and so, so many curse words, the show was much-beloved and critically acclaimed but cancelled after its third season, left without a proper ending.
Until now! Today, HBO programming president Casey Bloys announced that production had begun on a Deadwood movie, 10 years after the show’s cancellation. Creator, producer and writer David Milch returns to do all that stuff again, with direction by Daniel Minahan. The original cast members are returning as well, including:
- Ian McShane (Al Swearengen)
- Timothy Olyphant (Seth Bullock)
- Molly Parker (Alma Ellsworth)
- Paula Malcomson (Trixie)
- John Hawkes (Sol Star)
- Anna Gunn (Martha Bullock)
- Dayton Callie (Charlie Utter)
- Brad Dourif (Doc Cochran)
- Robin Weigert (“Calamity” Jane Canary)
- William Sanderson (E.B. Farnum)
- Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs)
- Gerald McRaney (George Hearst)
And introducing Jade Pettyjohn as Caroline. The gang’s all here…and also Caroline!

Here’s how HBO describes the movie:
"In the “Deadwood” film, the indelible characters of the series are reunited after ten years to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought."
Hopefully this movie will give Deadwood fans the closure they crave. HBO’s press release didn’t mention a release date, but if the cameras are rolling now, a 2019 bow seems likely.
