The third season of The Last Kingdom, the historical fiction series about the struggle between Saxon Englanders and Viking Danes in 9th century Britain, drops on November 19, and the Netflix publicity machine is spinning into high gear. The streaming service released the trailer about a week back, and since then, we’re gotten a bunch of short video clips highlighting the characters, some cool new PR images, and interviews with the stars.
Let’s take a look at those character clips first, starting with one about newcomer Skade (Thea Sofie Loch Naess):
Skade is a powerful Dane seer. Quick with the knife, she’s obviously used to a certain level of respect. She’s as brutal as the world she lives in, and we wonder if she has the potential to bewitch Uhtred.
And speaking of our protagonist…
This clip isn’t new. It’s Uhtred riding out of Winchester in the final sequence of season 2, with Aethelred, Aldhelm, Aethelflaed, Gisela, Finan and Sihtric at his side.
Finally, we have another new character: the Viking warrior Bloodhair (Ola Rapace), who came by his name honestly:
“From the smallest pig to the golden crown upon Alfred’s head, Wessex, and everything it holds, shall belong to the warriors of Bloodhair!” Looks like Alfred’s hope for peace with the Danes has imploded again, and we have a new villain. Will it be death by axe blow or scalp infection?
And the news gets better for Last Kingdom fans: Check out these interviews with the main cast, conducted at MCM Comic Con by Colin Hart of Heyuguys.com. The first interview features cast members Alexander Dreymon (Uhtred), Emily Cox (Brida), Harry McEntire (Aethelwold) and Tony Regbo (Aethelred). NO SPOILERS.
Next, spend some time with Eliza Butterworth (Aelswith), David Dawson (King Alfred), Millie Brady (Aethelflaed) and Timothy Innes (Edward). Dawson is far less dour out of character, and Butterworth far more bubbly!
So it seems that all of these characters survived the stretch of time between seasons 2 and 3, which looks like it’s been considerable. At the end of season 2, Alfred’s son Edward was 3 years old. He’s now played by Timothy Innes, who can’t be playing him much younger than 16 years of age. So over a decade has passed.
Finally, here are some cool promotional images that pit two new Viking characters against two of our Saxon protagonists:
On the left, we’ve got the Viking sorceress Skade, and on the right our fighting Saxon nun, Hild. In season 2, Hild put away her sword and armor and returned to the holy life. But with Skade and her beserkers running around, she may not be able to stay out of the frey.
And here we have the Viking warlord Bloodhair versus our resilient Saxon/Dane hero Uhtred. We can imagine no scenario whatsoever where these two guys do not clash.
Consider out appetite whetted! Raise the fyrd! We’re counting the days until November 19!
