Breaking Bad, the critically acclaimed show about a high-school chemistry teacher-turned meth kingpin that put AMC on the map, is getting a feature-length film, with creator Vince Gilligan at the helm. According to the Albuquerque Journal, the movie will begin production this month in…well, Albuquerque, New Mexico. It has the working title of Greenbrier.

The film will follow “the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom.” When last we saw Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) in the Breaking Bad series finale, he’d just been rescued by his frenemy Walter White (Bryan Cranston) from a group of neo-Nazis holding him against his will and forcing him to make high-quality meth. The movie would almost certainly follow him, although there’s no confirmation on whether Paul is involved. As for Cranston, Walter White died in the finale…or at least it looked like he did.

About a month ago, both Cranston and Paul told Entertainment Weekly they’d be up for appearing in Better Call Saul, Gilligan’s Breaking Bad prequel series. In that same interview, Gilligan sort of hinted at Jesse’s future.

"It’s funny, people do ask me from time to time, “What happened to Jesse?” As if my opinion gives it some sort of a imprimatur of authenticity. I guess I understand why people would think that, but unless and until we do it for real, anyone’s opinion is every bit as valid as mine. Personally, I’d like to think he got away. I don’t know how he got away exactly, and maybe he got to Alaska. I’d like to believe that he did because I think most folks can agree he’s suffered enough."

“But again, until we hear otherwise — something else is added to the canon — It’s really in the eye of the beholder,” he said. Well, now’s his chance.

This will be the first film Vince Gilligan makes under the terms of his three-picture deal with Sony, which produced Breaking Bad with AMC. With the exception of that brief logline, no details about the film have been released, but production is expected to end in early February of 2019, so there should be some sort of official information before long.
