The DC Extended Universe movies may have had their ups and downs over the past few years, but it looks like Aquaman, about the origins of the eponymous sea-dwelling superhero, could be a bright spot. If nothing else, it has Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa in the lead role, which is always a plus. From Khal Drogo to now, this guy is never less than charismatic.
Just the other day, Warner Bros. released a mess of glossy new promotional photos for the film. Take a look at ’em, starting with Momoa as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, aka King Talks-to-Fish:
Nicole Kidman plays Queen Atlanna, Arthur’s mother. She had him when she decided to slum for a while with a human lighthouse keeper.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Black Manta, a a technologically inclined mercenary.
Amber Heard is Princess Mera. Based on the trailers, it looks like she’ll play mentor/straight-faced sidekick to Aquaman.
Dolph Lundgren plays…wait, Dolph Lundgren is in this? Ivan Drago from Rocky IV?
Okay, recalibrating…Lundgren plays King Nereus, Mera’s father. Here he is riding a seahorse, but a giant badass seahorse:
The reliable Patrick Wilson plays Aquaman’s ambitous half-brother King Orm, who wants to declare war on the surface world. Ladies and gentlemen we have a villain…well, a second villain.
And finally, Willem Dafoe plays…wait, Willem Dafoe is also in this? With his shark smile?
Recalibrating again…Dafoe plays Vulko, an advisor to King Orm and a mentor to Aquaman.
Aquaman opens on December 14. It’s fish for Christmas.
