Doctor Who: The First Doctor Adventures Volume Three – new trailer and details revealed!

More details have been revealed about the third volume of Doctor Who: The First Doctor Adventures. Including a brand new trailer!

With just two volumes, The First Doctor Adventures has already proven itself to be an incredibly strong series. While it focuses on a relatively new cast playing previously established characters, the series has done an excellent job of recapturing the spirit of early Doctor Who.

And that looks set to be true of the third volume, too. We’ve been excited about this release for a while, especially when it was announced that Carole Ann Ford, the original Susan Foreman, would feature in the new box set. But what role will she be playing?

Yesterday, Big Finish revealed more details about what we can expect from volume three. Check out the official synopsis as well as the trailer below.

"3.1 The Phoenicians by Marc PlattIn ancient Tyre, the Phoenician civilisation commands the oceans. But times are turbulent – the young King’s quarrel with his sister threatens to divide the nation. On perilous seas, Ian becomes Princess Elissa’s favourite, while Susan and Barbara face losing their freedom. In the city, the Doctor falls foul of King Pygmalion. As they reach dangerous shores, the travellers fight to survive as legend becomes history…3.2 Tick-Tock World by Guy AdamsWhen disaster befalls the TARDIS, its occupants find themselves in a bizarre location, somewhere between space and time.Desperate survivors hide among ruins, greedy scavenging creatures hunt new prey, and ghosts scream out warnings across time. All the while, a mysterious woman watches the TARDIS crew, knowing, as sure as tock follows tick, that a terrible fate awaits them…"

What to expect?

So we know from the details for the first story that we’ll be getting another pure historical, this time by Marc Platt. This wouldn’t normally be surprising, especially as Platt has an excellent knack for the historicals.

The Flames of Cadiz, which featured William Russell as Ian and Carole Ann Ford as Susan, was an absolutely fantastic story, and really used the pure historical format perfectly. It also gave plenty of drama to the regular characters and added in some interesting conflict, too. It’s certainly an audio that’s worth tracking down.

However, there’s something else that Marc Platt is rather good at: exploring the unique relationship between the Doctor and his granddaughter. He’s done it with the First Doctor, in stories such as Quinnis and The Beginning.

But he’s also explored their relationship much, much further, too. An Earthly Child revealed what happened when the Eighth Doctor finally came back for his granddaughter and lived up to his promise. Relative Dimensions explored just how disastrous a TARDIS Christmas dinner can really be.

More from Winter is Coming

So when Ford’s casting as “the Woman” was announced, and Marc Platt was announced as one of the writers for the box set, I rather naturally assumed that it would be this story that he would be telling.

But no. Instead, it’s Guy Adams who’s telling the story of the mysterious woman that Ford’s playing. While I’m sure she is an older Susan, particularly as the story seems to be focused on how dangerous time can be, it’ll be interesting to find out the full context of her character. Is she the older Susan that we know from the Eighth Doctor Adventures? Or is there something else going on?

Adams is another great writer who also knows how to write well for the First Doctor. The Great White Hurricane from the first box set is a prime example of this. So I’m curious to see what his next story will be like. Especially considering Hurricane was a pure historical and Tick-Tock World sounds far closer to hard sci-fi.

Doctor Who: The First Doctor Adventures: Volume Three will be released in January 2019.
