Now Disney is making a live-action Star Wars show about the lead guy from Rogue One
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a 2016 movie about how the fledgling Rebel Alliance stole the top-secret plans to the Death Star so they could blow it up in Star Wars: A New Hope…and again in Return of the Jedi. Now, according to StarWars.com, this prequel movie is getting a prequel TV show, to air exclusively on Disney’s upcoming streaming service. The show will see Diego Luna reprise his role as Captain Cassian Andor, but younger, and not dead yet.
“Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me,” said Luna. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”
The series is being described as a “rousing spy thriller” that will be “filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.” If you haven’t seen Rogue One: A Star Wars Story yet, it’s worth a watch.
Having made just over $1 billion at the box office, Rogue One was a big success, so it makes some sense for Disney to double down on it for a prequel. There’s no word on a release date yet, nor do we know if Darth Vader might appear, crushing larynxes and making quips. Personally, all I want is for Alan Tudyk to reprise his role as Cassian’s sassy sidekick droid, K-2SO.
The Cassian show is the second live-action Star Wars show on Disney’s docket, with Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian already in the midst of filming. In the wake of the box office disappointment that was Solo, Disney said it was thinking of scaling back its Star Wars output, but clearly that doesn’t apply to TV.
There’s more thing to note here: it looks like Disney’s streaming service will officially be called Disney+. It’s no “CBS All Access,” but it’ll serve.
