Before Rodrigo Santoro was playing Hector Escaton, he was a suave heartthrob in 2003’s Love Actually.

Rodrigo Santoro won us over in Westworld season 1 as the gunslinging partner of Thandie Newton’s Maeve Millay. But long before his days in a Western drama, he was in one of the most iconic romcoms of our time–Love Actually.

Don’t remember who he played? Let us be the one to remind you! In the film, Laura Linney’s character, Sarah, was in love with Karl, who was played by Rodrigo Santoro. The two worked together and over a course of years, Sarah would just admire Karl from a distance.

That is until one night the two started hooking up and it seemed like Sarah’s dreams were finally coming true. However, things never ended up working out because Sarah’s brother was mentally ill and a lot her attention went to him, something that Karl wasn’t willing to sign up for.

While the movie never explored what could have been for these two characters, Rodrigo Santoro spoke about the Love Actually sequel and how he was meant to be in it. This 15-minute sequel aired on Red Nose Day in the U.K. and the U.S. back in 2017 and brought back many of the film’s original characters.

Rodrigo Santoro was unable to participate even though writer and director of the original film, Richard Curtis, asked him back. At the time of filming, he was in Cuba film and unable to join them for the U.S version of the sequel which brought back Linney’s character. As a result, Linney’s character got a different ending which involved her ending up with a character played by Patrick Dempsey.

However, if Santoro could have made it back for the mini-sequel, perhaps Karl and Sarah would have ended up together after all. Many fans actually preferred the ending Sarah got instead of ending up with Karl because of his reaction to her brother, but hey, we’ve forgiven him since and Santoro has given us a lot to love in Hector.
