Composer creates original score for Game of Thrones retrospective video

Fan-edited videos about Game of Thrones are many, and a lot of them are really good. They rarely have original scores, though. Vitaliy Zavadskyy, a Toronto-based composer who’s created music for films screened at the Cannes Film Festival, among other places, put together this retrospective video covering the first seven seasons of the show, underlaid with his own musical creation. It’s stirring stuff. Check it out:

I like the use of bells in the song; I don’t hear many of those in Ramin Djawadi’s official music for Game of Thrones, but they fit the style of the show very well. Beyond that, Zavadskyy’s score has the sweep and swell necessary for a show as bold and expansive as this, and he’s chosen wonderful images to go along with it. That Blackwater explosion is just perfect for a big booming moment, in this or any song.

Montage needs more Arya, though. But nobody’s perfect.

Zavadskyy seems to make a hobby of creating original music for existing properties; he’s also written tracks inspired by stuff like Pacific Rim, Blade Runner and Pirates of the Caribbean. Guy’s talented. It’s obviously too late for HBO to hire Zavadskyy to score something for Game of Thrones (not that the brilliant Ramin Djawadi needs much help), but I hear they’re making a prequel or five. How about it, HBO?
