Twins play The Rains of Castamere on harps, and other Game of Thrones song covers
By Dan Selcke
For as long as there’s been Game of Thrones, there have been covers of the Game of Thrones score. Today, we feast on the creativity of talented musicians the internet over, starting with this “Rains of Castamere” cover from twin harpists Camille and Kennerly:
No, this video isn’t new, but I haven’t seen it, and its twins in medieval garb playing “The Rains of Castamere” on harps…and then they vanish like ghosts at the end of the video. It deserves to be seen again.
Before we move on, let’s simple things up a bit with ZHL242’s rendition of “The Rains of Castamere” on trumpet, in a stairwell, the melody reverberating off the bare walls like the fading memories of all those killed in Tywin Lannister’s purge of his enemies?
Have we come back down? Good. Let’s rev back up with this baroque, opulent “Rains of Castamere” cover from Grissini Project, complete with soaring vocals:
One more “Rains” cover before we move on. When Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi was touring with the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience earlier this year, System of a Down lead singer Serj Tankian stopped by for one night and one night only to give his rendition of the famous Lannister anthem, during the show at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Take it away, Serj:
“The Rains of Castamere” is the most famous Lannister song to come out of Game of Thrones, but “Light of the Seven,” which underscores Cersei’s destruction of the Sept of Baelor, is a close second. It’s already a creepy song, but Tetsuo’s music box version is plain chilling:
I recommend the proprietors of Halloween haunted houses play that on a loop.
But the most popular target for Game of Thrones covers has and probably always will be the theme song, whether it’s being played by a full classical ensemble…
…or one guy on a guitar, here giving it a bit more rhythm:
There are a million different spins on this song, a testament to the strength of Ramin Djawadi’s original composition. Shahab9595 brings us a “Persian version”…
…and Reddit comes through with a Mariachi take:
"[NO SPOILERS] Mariachi of Thrones from gameofthrones"
Then there’s this kid, who performs the song a cappella:
He’s going places.
And there are surely many more covers to come. Keep it up, internet. I believe in you.
