HBO has just released two new images videos promos for its upcoming Watchmen series, headed up by Lost writer-producer Damon Lindelof. The both of them expand on a promo released back on October, of a police officer wearing a yellow mask:
It ends up that this officer is far from the only one. The new teasers show that, in this series, the world is full of these masked officers:
The final promo shows one of these guys hard at work:
What does it all mean? Lindelof, as ever, clearly doesn’t want us to know everything, but is also dropping hints. The yellow masks resemble the one worn by the vigilante superhero Rorschach in the original comic book. HBO’s series is set in modern times, years after the conclusion of that story. Maybe the authorities revere Rorschach as a hero? Or it could just be a reference for fans.
Intriguing bits about Watchmen continue to leak out. Jeremy Irons is officially part of the cast, James Wolk is playing an Oklahoman politician, and set pictures give us clues about what’s going on in this brave new world. And HBO’s Instagram posts may provide the most fascinating teases of all, which isn’t surprising considering that Lindelof, long a master of audience manipulation, is at the wheel. It’s still unclear exactly what kind of show HBO is making, but the more we see, the more we want to find out.
Watchmen premieres sometime next year.
