Let’s all pretend to be angry about the possibility of a Back to the Future reboot
If you’re a child of the ’80s, then there’s probably a small piece of you that has always wondered why no one in Hollywood has yet to reboot or at least make a sequel to the Back to the Future movies, the timeless story about a boy, his old guy friend, and their time machine.
I mean, everything else is getting remade or rebooted, there’s even a live-action Lion King movie on the way, so it’s odd that Robert Zemeckis’ classic trilogy has remained untouched.
But that could all change soon, especially if some producer gets a load of a poll from The Hollywood Reporter/Morning Consult. Of 2,201 adults surveyed, 71 percent said they’d be more interested in the further adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown over new entries in series like Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and Toy Story.

According to Tyler Sinclair, vice president for Morning Consultant, there is a “strong consumer demand for movie reboots and sequels, which spells good news for movie studios looking to capitalize on that nostalgic feeling. Our polling finds half of Americans say they are much more likely to watch throwbacks and revivals.”
That “nostalgic feeling” is extremely powerful. According tot he poll results, 71 percent of people said they’d be more likely to watch a new installment in a series — any series — because they had liked earlier releases, and 63 percent said they’d be more likely to watch a new installment if members of the original cast returned. Meanwhile, just 3 percent said they’d be less likely to watch a new installment because of how they felt about the previous movies or the cast. So if you’re ever wondering why Hollywood likes to remake and reboot things so much, here’s your answer: people like it.
Look at what Disney has done with its Star Wars sequel trilogy. Instead of throwing an all-new cast at fans and hoping for the best, the House of Mouse included beloved cast members from the original trilogy in The Force Awakens ($2 billion worldwide box office) and The Last Jedi ($1.3 worldwide box office). Nostalgia just works.
Still, there are a lot of people not included in that group of 2,201; surely not everyone would want a Back to the Future reboot?
At this point, it’s not impossible to bring back some of the old cast members for a Back to the Future reboot. Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown) is 80 years old and still working, but Michael J. Fox (Marty McFly) has been partly retired since 2000. So if this gonna happen, it better happen soon.
