Other than the final season of Game of Thrones, the third of season of Netflix’s Stranger Things may be the most highly-anticipated returning show of 2019. The horror-meets-80s-pastiche-meets-coming-of-age-story has caught on in a big way, with its young cast members becoming celebrities and fans wondering what fresh hell the Upside Down will unleash on our heroes next.

The show’s third season will drop next summer. Speaking to De Telegraaf at the Heroes Dutch Comic Con in Utrecht, star Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) talked about what to expect. “It’s scarier, it’s darker, it’s funnier,” to said. We can expect familiar otherworldly baddies from the Upside Down to return, “but there’s also a completely new form of antagonization towards our heroes.”
And also there will be a mall, the most terrifying threat of all:
Matarazzo also addressed how long the series will run, something that’s been in the news lately; for whatever reason, a bunch of outlets have gotten the idea that the show’s third season will be its last. Matarazzo set everyone straight:
"I know that [creators] Matt and Ross [Duffer], their goal is not to go as many seasons as possible. It’s to go until they finish their story, and I’ve heard the magic number is either four or five. We just finished up three – three is not the last one planned."
The Duffers have thrown around the four or five seasons number before, mentioning it to E! last year. “It’s hard, like four seems short, five seems long. So I don’t know what to do.” So we don’t know exactly how many times we’ll return to Hawkins, Indiana, but we can rest assured knowing that there’s more one than one trip in our future.
