HBO and Brewery Ommegang have released the final beer in the Royal Reserve Collection, a quartet of drinks celebrating some of the most memorable characters on Game of Thrones ahead of the show’s final season. Is the King in the North Belgian Aged Imperial Stout worth your beer dollars? In a word, yes! For details, read on.
I find that stouts are polarizing; you either enjoy them or you don’t. Personally, I like a beer that tastes like I could eat it, and the King in the North stout is a really good one. There’s are a lot of flavors at play, including hints of coffee, chocolate, bourbon and vanilla, all of them resting thick on the tongue before going down smooth in a rich, chewy finish. This is the kind of beer that is just as good paired with food (Brewery Ommegang recommends dark meats) as drunk by itself. Either way, you’re getting your money’s worth.
Also it’s 11% ABV, so it’ll get you nice and buzzed for the holidays.
Not everyone loved this beer as much as I did. Culturess’ Cheryl Wassenaar and I sampled a bottle of the King in the North stout on the latest episode of Take the Black, and while I downed plenty, Cheryl was less enthused:
Like I said, stouts are polarizing, but I recommend this one whole-heartedly.
As per usual, the bottle itself is pretty cool, too, with a muted black-and-grey color scheme worthy of the dark cloud constantly hanging around Jon Snow. It also pours very dark, so kudos to Brewery Ommegang for thematic consistency.
