30 greatest Doctor Who companions of all time

4. Sarah Jane Smith

Just missing out on a medal ceremony position and up next on this greatest Doctor Who companions of all time list in a very respectful fourth place is Sarah Jane Smith.

Just like another companion that we have not talked about yet, and one that may, or may not feature at some point on this list, Sarah Jane Smith has been a friend, and companion, to many doctors across time.

Companion to Doctors three, four, five, and ten. There are few companions who have helped so many versions of the Time Lord. This fact alone would have secured Sarah Jane Smith’s position on this list. But, coupled with the fact that she garnered her very own spin-off series, along with an amazing robotic dog who is effectively a Swiss Army Knife, for The Doctor and his companions.

Never mind all of that. What makes Sarah Jane Smith so brilliant is her nature and character. Smart, brave, and funny, Sarah Jane had great chemistry with The Doctor and held her own on many of their adventures.

Considered to be the companion that all companions should be compared to, although modern series fans would argue that title should be given to Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane is considered one of the greatest Doctor Who companions of all time among Doctor Who fans from both the classic franchise and the modern-day franchise. And there are very few who can attest to a winning over fans from both the classic and modern-day era.
