Got $150,000 lying around? You could own Luke Skywalker’s original lightsaber

It’s time to flip the couch cushions and raid the piggy bank, because starting December 11, Hollywood auction house Profiles in History will be auctioning off Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber from 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope. Of course, if you want to own this piece of movie memorabilia, you’ll need to shell out somewhere between $150,000 to $200,000, but can one really put a price tag on a nerd’s happiness?

But there’s a caveat. Profiles in History bills the lightsaber as “The original Mark Hamill ‘Luke Skywalker’ lightsaber from Star Wars: A New Hope.” But when Hamill himself saw this, he threw some cold water on it:

So who’s right? As it turns out, Hamill may have jumped the gun with his tweet, as the man who won an Academy Award for production design on A New Hope, Roger Christian, told the BBC that, “There are five originals I handmade myself, and this is one of them. It is real — I’ve got the Oscar to prove it.” And there you have it, straight from the guy who made the elegant weapon for a more civilized age. It’s legit.

There are a few more interesting pieces of Star Wars memorabilia up for auction, including:

  • “An original T.I.E. Fighter Helmet from Star Wars: A New Hope, estimated to sell for $200,000 – $300,000.” It’s the most expensive paperweight ever.
  • “A pair of C-3PO hands used in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, estimated to sell for $40,000 – $60,000.”
  • “An Imperial Scout Trooper helmet used in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, estimated to sell for $100,000 – $150,000.” It didn’t save our heroes from head trauma when they crashed into trees on the moon of Endor, but it should serve the modern fan on the go.
  • “An original Star Wars: The Force Awakens screen used Stormtrooper helmet signed by Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley and other lead cast members of the film, estimated to sell for $80,000 – $120,000.” It’s the second most expensive paperweight ever.

I’m sure Mark Hamill meant well; he probably thought the lightsaber was being falsely advertised as the only one in existence, when in fact are were a few hanging around. As always, Hamill is very active Twitter, even revealing the title for the next mainline Star Wars film:

Mark it down.
