It’s finally here, the first teaser trailer for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones! It came at the end of a panel at the Comic Con Experience (CCXP) in Brazil, following a panel with showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss and cast members Maisie Williams (Ara Stark) and John Bradley (Samwell Tarley). Christmas comes early. Check it out:
This reminds me a lot of the Sigils teaser that came out ahead of Game of Thrones season 7; there’s not technically any new footage, but there’s plenty of juicy symbolism.
We get a low view of Daenerys’ table map of Westeros from Dragonstone. Frost spreads over as eerie variation of Ramin Djawadi’s White Walker thing creeps on to the soundtrack. The frost twists over first a wolf map marker, then a dragon map marker. On another part of the map: fire. It engulfs a Lannister lion map marker, and soon ice and fire meet in the middle. The board crackles and splits and hisses, and the camera pulls back: “Game of Thrones. The Final Season. April 2019.”
All in all, it’s a terrific teaser, full of tension and promise. The show has been leaning in to the ice and fire theme for a while now — the marketing for season 7 also highlighted it, and this is the most literal use of it yet. April, here we come!
What do you guys make of the new teaser?
