‘Stranger Things 3: The Game’ is a 16-bit brawler based on the show’s third season

On Thursday night during The Game Awards, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed the trailer for an all-new video game called Stranger Things 3: The Game, that will have ties to the Netflix show’s third season.  Check it out:

Netflix describes the game as a “meticulously crafted Action Adventure RPG that pays homage to the 16-bit era,” which checks out. The thugs that Hopper and friends fight look straight out of Super Double Dragon for the SNES.

If Netflix wanted to keep perfectly in line with Stranger Things’ 1980s setting, it would make an 8-bit-style game, but I guess that would asking a lot of players. Video games have come a long way since then.

As for the game being tied up with the show’s third season, it looks like a lot of it happens a the Starcourt Mall, which we’ve seen in a teaser:

I wonder if the Shadow Monster and his Demogorgon pals will visit Steve at Scoops Ahoy?

This marks the second time Netflix and developer BonusXP have teamed up for a Stranger Things video game. Before season 2, they collaborated on a Stranger Things mobile game that had a nice Legend of Zelda feel to it. It looks like they’ve shifted to making a brawler.

For now, it’s unclear if Hopper, Lucas and Billy are the only playable characters, but there’s apparently a cooperative element. We don’t have a release date for Stranger Things 3: The Game, but smart money has it dropping around the debut of the third season in the summer of 2019. The game will be available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Mac and PC.
