George R.R. Martin promises fans “WILL get the end of A Song of Ice and Fire”

A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin just concluded a promotional tour for his new book, Fire & Blood. Usually reluctant to do press, Martin’s been giving bunches of interviews, appearing on stage in New Jersey with John Hodgman, and even telling us where it can get the best pizza in New York City. It’s been a busy trip.

But it’s over now, and Martin is back in his “fortress of solitude.” Writing on his Not a Blog, he thanked his fans, publishers and agents for helping make Fire & Blood a success (it debuted at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list, and sits at #2 as of this writing) and made a promise to everyone eagerly awaiting The Winds of Winter, the next book in his Song of Ice and Fire series:

"It won’t be tomorrow, and it won’t be next week, but you will get the end of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.  Meanwhile, you have the final season of GAME OF THRONES coming, and the new show that is not yet officially called THE LONG NIGHT being cast, and a couple more shows still being scripted… and a few other cool things in the works as well."

Discussions of Martin’s slow progress on this books come pretty standard now, but it’s good to hear him optimistic about the future.

The old gods and the new willing, we’ll finally see The Winds of Winter on store shelves sometime in 2019. Paired with the final season of Game of Thrones, that would make it the biggest year for Westeros yet; it’d be hard to imagine anything ever topping it. Beyond that, there’s A Dream of Spring, HBO’s prequel, and whatever “other cool things” are apparently in development. We’ll keep hoping and waiting and watching and reading.
