Bishop Heahmund reveals his plan to Lagertha in a clip from tonight’s new episode of Vikings

The fifth season of Vikings continues tonight on History with “A New God.” Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) has been imprisoned for the murder of Lord Cuthred (not a very Christian thing to do). In an exclusive clip from SyFy Wire, Heahmund has a plan to reverse his fortunes, but he’ll need the help of Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) to do it. Check it out, but beware SPOILERS:

So Heahmund is looking to beg King Alfred (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) for his freedom so that he and the other Vikings he brought with him from Kattegat can stand with Alfred’s army when the Viking forces attack Wessex.

Cool plan, bro. Except for one thing: you’re in jail now, and you murdered another Bishop. I don’t know how Heahmund thinks his plan will work, especially if he’s executed and Lagertha’s Vikings refuse to help Alfred because of it. The hopes of the exiled Vikings stand upon the edge of a knife. If Lagertha strays but a little, they will fail.

Vikings creator Michael Hirst talked to SyFy Wire about Lagertha’s plight. “She’s doubly vulnerable, which is not how we’re used to seeing Lagertha,” he said. “She’s usually someone who’s thought things through and knows what she wants to do. This season, that disassociation becomes even more pronounced. She will start to question who she is, and this is a huge thing for the character.”

Is Lagertha a warrior queen or a peaceful farmer looking for land in Wessex? We’ll know more tonight, when “A New God” airs at 9:00 p.m. EST. We’ll be covering it here.
