Ed Sheeran may have a cameo in Star Wars, too, and other celebrity stuff

Unquestionably one of the high points of Game of Thrones season 7 was musician Ed Sheeran’s appearance as a Lannister soldier in “Dragonstone.” The fans loved it, the press loved it, and it is remembered today as the moment Game of Thrones went from being a fun show about dragons to a cultural touchstone.

I’m kidding. Fans freaked out and trolled Sheeran online to the point where he deleted his Twitter account, and the episode director felt the need to step up and defend the musician from people unreasonably angry about an eight-second cameo that in no way detracted from a sweet, easy-breezy scene about Arya Stark reconnecting with her humanity. It was a good example of peak internet outrage culture at work.

And now it might happen again, as The Sun reports that Sheeran has snagged a cameo role as a stormtrooper in Star Wars: Episode IX, which is due out this time next year. But if he’s a stormtrooper, would we even know it’s him? Eh, I doubt that will stop people from complaining.

Granted, this is just a rumor right now, but as The A.V. Club points out, doesn’t it sound like the kind of thing that could happen?  Sheeran wouldn’t be the first celebrity to get a cameo in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, after all. The movies have also made room for Simon Pegg, Tom Hardy, Daniel Craig, Edgar Wright, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Princes Henry and William and Carrie Fisher’s dog, among others.
