Ice spiders grace the cover of the 2020 A Song of Ice and Fire calendar

facebooktwitterreddit

The 2019 Song of Ice and Fire calendar, with illustrations by John Jude Palencar, is available now. As always, it is very pretty:

Who wouldn’t want to mark down important dates under that image?

But 2019 is less than a month away; it’s practically old news already. What about 2020? Writing on his Not a BlogASOAIF author George R.R. Martin gave us a sneak peak at the cover of the 2020 calendar, with illustrations by John Howe:

That’ll be an ice spider as big as a hound, just like Old Nan said. Actually, that one looks a good deal bigger than a Hound. Old Nan was holding out on us.

Anyway, the magical creatures of the World of Ice and Fire is the theme of the 2020 calendar, so expect lots of other gorgeous renderings of beasties. Dragons seem an obvious choice; there are no shortage of interesting ones to go around. We’ll probably see direwolves, great lions and aurochs. And hey, aren’t there supposed to be unicorns on the isle of Skagos? We just blew this calendar open.

John Howe is a pretty good get for this project. He worked on a limited illustrated edition of A Clash of Kings back in the day, worked on the film version of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, and created maps for The Lord of the RingsThe Hobbit and The Silmarillion. To this day, his work on J.R.R Tolkien’s remains what he’s best known for…at least until this calendar comes out.

The 2020 Song of Ice and Fire calendar will be out a year from now, whereupon we’ll get a look at the 2021 one. Welcome to the cycle.
