Mahershala Ali shows off old man makeup in new True Detective trailer

The first season of True Detective dropped on HBO in 2014 and immediately hooked people with its careful pacing, eerie mood and magnetic performances from leads Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who played detectives trying to solve a case that had run cold when they were last on it nearly 20 years before. Then season 2 came along, and it was about the occult origins of the California highway system or something, and people were left wondering what the hell they just watched.

Now, after a few years off, series creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto is back with a third season, and it’s looking a little more measured. For one thing, there’s less stunt casting this time around. While season 2 spread itself between stories headlined by Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch, season 3 seems to be drilling down on a character played by Mahershala Ali, with actors like Carmen Ejogo and Stephen Dorff in supporting roles. Ali plays Wayne Hays, a state police officer from northwest Arkansas who, in classic True Detective fashion, is still piecing together the puzzle pieces of a case he worked years ago but never solved. The season will jump between three different time periods, which gives the makeup department the chance to age Ali up and down and all around. The latest trailer shows off what the 44-year-old Ali will look like as an older man:

True Detective season 3 drops on January 13. I’m pulling for it. The first season was good watching and it looks like the creative team has its head screwed on right again.
